Something that surprised me the most as I began digging into my problem area was how many stray animals are within the city limits of Detroit and how many animal control workers there are for all of these animals. At the time of my research there were only four animal control workers for the City of Detroit and anywhere from 10,000 to 25,000 stray animals within the city. Another thing that surprised me while I was doing my research was how many animals that are brought into animal shelters are put down. On average 30% of dogs and 40% of cats brought into shelters are euthanized. This is much higher than I had thought prior to my research.
I plan on continue to work on this problem by volunteering in the summer time at shelters. I also want to help collect stuff for dogs and cats, such as toys, leashes, collars, food, etc. and donate them to an animal shelter.
I learned from the process of group work that I am better at working alone on projects. I find it very hard to work together on things especially when not all of our group members live on campus or have much overlapping in our schedules. For a group one of the biggest issues was that we didn’t have time to meet outside of class due to our groups class/work schedules. A positive of working in groups for this project was that it was less overwhelming and it was a very easy project to split up between our group.
This group project gave me a look at what it will be like to work in real world in the future. Obviously I will be working with others a lot in my future career in the medical field, so working with others is something I need to get used to. I learned that I need to be more patient with others and be more understanding. Working in groups made it easy for us to split up the work and give ourselves clear deadlines on when we needed stuff finished as group so we could edit everything and collaborate on if things needed to be added/removed. This was a very good experience learning wise for me. I believe these skills I learned about working with others this semester will stick with me through the rest of my life because working with others is something all of us will have to do for the rest of our lives.
My involvement in this researching this issue has made me realize that a lot of work needs to be done for these animals. Many people do not see this as a pressing issue but it is an ongoing problem that needs to be fixed. Not just the stray animals in the City of Detroit, but also the animal cruelty laws. We welcome these pets into our homes and treat them as part of our family, so the laws around the abuse of these pets should be a lot stricter in terms of punishment. Also I believe if you are a convicted animal abuser you should never be allowed to legally own another animal.
If I could do this semester over again I think I would have started working on the project much sooner. I also would have spent more time finding somewhere to volunteer. In addition to those two things I also would have spent much more time working on our final paper. Even though I feel our paper is good, I believe our paper could have been much better than what it was. Another thing that I would have done if we had the choice would to have give our presentations another week earlier. I think the presentations was very helpful, and everyone asked a lot of great questions, but working in all of these questions with only two weeks to write our paper and being stressed with studying for the rest of my finals was a little hard to do in my opinion.
